The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) is pleased to welcome a new Institution Member to the global zoo and aquarium community – The National Aquarium, based in the United States of America.

Founded in 1981, the National Aquarium is a nonprofit organisation whose mission is to connect people with nature to inspire compassion and care for our ocean planet. Their compelling exhibits, science-based education programmes and hands-on field initiatives engage more than 1.2 million people annually. One of the top three aquariums in the United States, the National Aquarium features thousands of fishes, birds, amphibians, reptiles and mammals living in award-winning habitats.

WAZA CEO, Dr Martín Zordan said, ‘We are very happy to welcome The National Aquarium as a new WAZA member. The work being done by the institution is crucial in working towards marine conservation, building on its rich history of local, regional and global conservation initiatives that provide real solutions for protecting aquatic and marine life alongside human communities.’

John Racanelli, President and CEO of the National Aquarium said, ‘The National Aquarium proudly joins our international WAZA peers in striving for an ethical, sustainable future for our industry, our planet, and the animals with which we share it.’

The National Aquarium prioritises their work to focus on combating climate change, saving wildlife and habitats, and stopping plastic pollution, and we advocate for smarter policies at local, state and federal levels. We have rescued, rehabilitated and released hundreds of marine mammals and endangered sea turtles, and are active participants in important research efforts.

The National Aquarium is also a member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
