Throughout 2021, WAZA hosted a series of webinars on a variety of sustainability focused topics, related to WAZA and the WAZA Committees’ work on sustainability. The webinars featured WAZA members and highlighted their work and shared insights from their sustainability journeys.

The first webinar in the Sustainability Webinar Series on Reducing the Use of Single-use Plastic at Your Zoo or Aquarium.
Hosted by Dr Judy Mann, Conservation Strategist at the South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR) and President-Elect of the International Zoo Educators Association (IZE), the webinar shared stories from WAZA member zoos and aquariums around the world that have successfully reduced plastic use in their facilities. It also looked at the WAZA Short Guide: How to Reduce Single-use Plastic at Your Zoo or Aquarium.Â

The second webinar in the series – Choosing Sustainable Forestry Products.
This webinar delved into the WAZA Short Guide: How to Choose Responsibly Sourced Forest Products at Your Zoo or Aquarium, provided more information on the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and its programme certification, as well as shared case studies from WAZA members.

The third webinar in the series – Going Carbon Neutral.
This webinar addressed carbon management and offsetting, and shared insights and challenges from WAZA members’ carbon journeys. The webinar was hosted by Mike Barclay, Chair of the WAZA Conservation and Environmental Sustainability Committee, and CEO of Wildlife Reserves Singapore.

The fourth webinar in the series – Sourcing Sustainable Palm Oil.Â
This webinar delved into the new WAZA Short Guide on Sourcing Sustainable Palm Oil provided more information on the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), shared case studies from WAZA members, as well as updates from the WAZA Subcommittee on Palm Oil. The webinar was hosted byTracey Gazibara, VP of Development and Marketing at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, and Co-chair of the WAZA Pam Oil Subcommittee.Â

This webinar examined Protecting our Planet: The WAZA Sustainability Strategy, and how zoos and aquariums can work towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our panellists shared case studies of how they are currently implementing the Sustainability Strategy within their institutions. The webinar was hosted by Karen Fifield, WAZA Vice-President, lead author of the WAZA Sustainability Strategy, and CEO of Wellington Zoo.Â
