Joint Position Statement on the Proposed Changes to the IUCN Member Dues for Venue-based Organisations

Posted: 27 November 2023

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA), the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) and the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) highly appreciate the work of the IUCN Council, and especially the Membership Dues Task Force, toward a more equitable calculation of member dues for venue- based institutions. The latest dues structure and process disproportionately affected institutions that fall under this category, which includes universities, museums, botanical gardens and indigenous people organisations as well as zoos and aquariums. Consequently, several IUCN Members of the above associations, many of whom were long-term, active members of IUCN for many years, consequently either left the Union or changed to affiliate membership, losing their right to vote as a consequence.

Our organisations very much welcome the original proposal from the IUCN Council and believe that the two amendments resulting from the online consultation further increase the strength, fairness and practical workability of the proposal. Amendment 1 removes a clause and provision for IUCN to reserve the right to verify self-reported expenditure, and Amendment 2 removes the minimum threshold of 25% for self-reported conservation expenditure as a proportion of total expenditure. We believe the adoption of the proposal with the amendments will result in a more equitable process, and venue-based members (re)joining IUCN; hence, we expect a positive effect on the total IUCN income from member dues, benefitting the Union as a whole.

Our organisation therefore strongly encourage IUCN Members across all categories of membership to vote in favour of both amendments and the original proposal as follows:

*Do you adopt Motion 001 entitled Proposed amendments to the Membership Dues Guide for venue-based organisations with amendment 1? Note: If the motion is adopted with amendment 1, the result of the vote on this motion without amendment will be considered irrelevant (Rule 60): Recommendation to vote YES

*Do you adopt Motion 001 entitled, Proposed amendments to the Membership Dues Guide for venue-based organisations with amendment 2? Note: If the motion is adopted with amendment 2, the result of the vote on this motion without amendment will be considered irrelevant (Rule 60): Recommendation to vote YES

*Do you adopt Motion 001 entitled, Proposed amendments to the Membership Dues Guide for venue-based organisations without amendment? Note: If the motion is adopted with amendment 1 or 2, the result of the vote on the motion without amendment will be considered irrelevant (Rule 60): Recommendation to vote YES
