WAZA and Wild Welfare Sign Memorandum of Understanding

Posted: 5 November 2024

The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) and NGO Wild Welfare have joined forces to collaboratively achieve high standards of animal welfare in zoos and aquariums around the world. The two organisations recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to foster and promote a shared commitment to improving welfare for animals in human care.

WAZA and Wild Welfare have a long history of working together and have now once again formalised the partnership and strengthened the existing relationship with this new MoU. The collaboration will focus on developing and implementing comprehensive animal welfare standards across WAZA’s membership and beyond.

Dr Martín Zordan, CEO of WAZA said, ‘We are delighted to have extended our relationship with Wild Welfare. This strategic partnership brings together WAZA’s global network and leadership in the zoo and aquarium community with Wild Welfare’s extensive expertise in animal welfare.’

Through this partnership, WAZA and Wild Welfare recognise the benefits of co-operation and communication in the implementation of their respective missions and in a shared commitment to improving animal welfare outcomes for animals in human care.

Simon Marsh, Director of Wild Welfare said, ‘The relationship between Wild Welfare and WAZA has provided many positive animal welfare outcomes over the years, and through this renewed MoU we are showing a real commitment to continue to drive forward improvements in animal welfare across the WAZA membership and beyond.’

The partnership will be implemented through a detailed two-year action plan, with regular joint meetings to monitor progress and adjust strategies as needed and is a key aspect of implementing WAZA’s vision to be a globally recognised and trusted leader advancing conservation and animal welfare.
