WAZA’s Commitment to Sustainability: The PalmOil Scan App and Its Role in Combating Deforestation

Posted: 2 May 2025

Deforestation issue and how palm oil commodity is contributing to it

Deforestation is a major environmental issue, with palm oil being one of the key commodities linked to large-scale deforestation. Palm oil is found in a wide range of everyday products, from food to cosmetics, making it a significant driver of land-use change, especially in tropical rainforests. The impact is affecting wildlife and accelerating climate change, as forests are cleared to make way for palm oil plantations.

This contributes to biodiversity loss and releases large amounts of carbon dioxide, further exacerbating climate change. It is clear that addressing the sustainability of palm oil production is crucial in the global fight against deforestation and environmental degradation.

The importance of sustainable palm oil

Sustainable palm oil plays a crucial role in reducing environmental damage caused by unsustainable palm oil production. Its cultivation has been linked to significant environmental issues such as deforestation, habitat loss, and increased greenhouse gas emissions. Choosing Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO) helps to address these issues by promoting responsible farming practices that protect ecosystems and reduce the carbon footprint.

By supporting these efforts, consumers contribute to a more ethical and environmentally responsible palm oil industry.

PalmOil Scan: helping consumers make sustainable choices

The PalmOil Scan app, developed by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) in collaboration with Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Chester Zoo, Auckland Zoo, and Zoos South Australia, is an essential tool for consumers who want to make more sustainable choices in their everyday purchases. The app, available in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore, empowers users to make informed decisions about their palm oil consumption by providing immediate access to information on whether a product’s manufacturer is committed to sourcing Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO).

With sustainability at its core, PalmOil Scan helps consumers support companies that actively work to reduce deforestation and protect biodiversity in some of the world’s most vital ecosystems.

Leadership in sustainability initiatives

As WAZA continues to advance its sustainability initiatives, we also celebrate the contributions of individuals whose involvement has been instrumental to these efforts.

Tracey Gazibara, Executive Vice President of Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, has been a driving force behind WAZA’s sustainable palm oil initiatives. Since 2018, her leadership has been instrumental in the development of the PalmOil Scan app.

Tracey’s dedication to sustainability has had a lasting impact on both the zoo and aquarium communities. As she prepares for her retirement, WAZA expresses its deep appreciation for her leadership and vision, which have shaped the future of sustainable palm oil sourcing and global conservation efforts.

Recognition of excellence

WAZA’s commitment to sustainability was recognised in November 2024 when the association received the RSPO Innovation Award at the Annual Roundtable Conference on Sustainable Palm Oil (RT2024) in Bangkok. This award highlights WAZA’s continuous innovation and leadership in the palm oil sector, reinforcing the importance of responsible practices that benefit both the environment and biodiversity.

Expanding the PalmOil Scan App globally

As part of WAZA’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainability, we encourage members to consider bringing the PalmOil Scan app to their regions. The app’s international reach already spans the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore, but its potential impact could be even greater with your help.

If you are interested in bringing the app to your region or have any questions, you can contact us (secretariat@waza.org) or contact the WAZA Palm Oil Task Force.

The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) is the global alliance of regional associations, national federations, zoos and aquariums, dedicated to the care and conservation of animals and their habitats around the world.
