WAZA CEO Dr Martín Zordan said, “Parque de la Naturaleza de Cabárceno represents a strong example of how landscape restoration can be developed into a long-term conservation and education initiative. We are pleased to welcome the institution to the WAZA community.” 

The institution is part of a long-established public framework for environmental management in northern Spain, contributing to coordinated regional efforts in landscape stewardship and public engagement. 

Míchel Valdés Ruiz, Director of Parque de la Naturaleza de Cabárceno said, “The brilliant idea was to convert an extensive area of 750 hectars, completely degraded by humans through mining exploitation, into a nature reserve. To this end, since Parque de la Naturaleza de Cabárceno opened in 1990, more than 4000 trees have been planted and actions have been taken in order to respect and increase the local biodiversity. Today, we continue day by day, working to preserve and enhance this wildlife treasure, because it is a true source of environmental education and inspiration for our visitors.” 

Parque de la Naturaleza de Cabárceno is a member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) and the Asociación Ibérica de Zoos y Acuarios (AIZA).
