WAZA Welcomes New Member - Fundação Jardim Zoológico de Brasília

The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) is pleased to welcome Fundação Jardim Zoológico de Brasília (Brasília Zoo), Brazil, as a new Institution Member. 

Established in 1957, Brasília Zoo has evolved into a modern conservation-focused institution, dedicated to biodiversity conservation, animal welfare, and environmental education. Located within Brazil’s Cerrado biome, one of the world’s most important biodiversity hotspots, the zoo plays a key role in protecting native species and raising public awareness of the importance of safeguarding ecosystems across Brazil and South America.

WAZA CEO Dr Martín Zordan said, “Brasília Zoo’s conservation and community engagement provide WAZA with both experience and inspiration to advance global wildlife protection. We look forward to their contributions within WAZA.” 

Brasília Zoo integrates conservation research, inclusive education programmes, and public engagement to foster respect for wildlife and inspire positive action. Its strategic location next to protected natural areas enhances regional ecosystem protection and supports long-term conservation. 

Wallison de Oliveira, President of Fundação Jardim Zoológico de Brasília, said, “Joining WAZA is a milestone that reinforces Brasília Zoo’s mission to care for wildlife, inspire people, and contribute actively to global conservation efforts.” 

Brasília Zoo is a member of the Latin American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums (ALPZA) and the Associação de Zoológicos e Aquários do Brasil (AZAB).
