The zoo’s vision is guided by a comprehensive strategic plan that focuses on animal welfare, conservation, education, sustainability, and community engagement. In 2023, the zoo unveiled a 25-year masterplan to reimagine the entire facility, with an emphasis on advancing animal wellbeing, creating immersive and educational visitor experiences, and strengthening long-term sustainability.

The Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium is committed to conservation locally and globally, from urban bird habitat restoration in Pennsylvania to partnerships in Africa and Asia. It participates in 38 Species Survival Plans, supports reintroduction programmes, and operates the International Conservation Center for breeding and research.
