Posted: 1 April 2025

The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) is pleased to welcome a new Institution Member to the global zoo and aquarium community, Saskatoon Zoo.

Originally a tree farm established in 1913, it expanded in 1972 when the Saskatoon Zoo opened within the park. Home to approximately 250 animals, their mission is to create memorable experiences to connect visitors to wildlife and their habitats.

WAZA CEO Dr Martín Zordan said, “We are proud to welcome Saskatoon Zoo to the WAZA community. Their strong commitment to animal welfare, conservation and public education reflects WAZA’s core mission, and we look forward to collaborating with them to advance these shared goals.”

Saskatoon Zoo is a key part of the city’s broader Green Space programme, offering visitors a chance to explore native wildlife, participate in conservation education, and experience the beauty of nature up close. The zoo is dedicated to providing its animals with high-quality care and contributing to global efforts to protect endangered species.

Jeff Mitchell, Zoo Manager at Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo said, “We are thrilled to join WAZA, showcasing our unwavering commitment to animal care, welfare and education. As the only accredited zoo in Saskatchewan, we are proud to be leaders in conservation and education in Canada. Our mission is to create impactful experiences that strengthen the bond between visitors, wildlife and natural environments. Being part of WAZA empowers us to achieve this goal, enhancing our ability to make a meaningful difference.”

Saskatoon Zoo is also a member of Canada’s Accredited Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA).
