Role Overview

Role Summary: Under general supervision, supervise and oversee the care and husbandry of a specific animal taxonomic group or assigned area.

Main Duties:

  • Hands-on management of all aspects of daily husbandry and care.
  • Performs professional zoo keeping duties as well as administrative duties associated with the provision of the needs of the keepers and animals within their area. Supervises and coordinates activities of animal keepers engaged in working with the animals within the assigned area.
  • Responsible in directing and aiding keepers in husbandry, care, refinement, development, positive conditioning training, environmental enrichment and feeding of the animals within the assigned area.
  • Implementing proper training and safety protocols related to working with the animals within the assigned area. When necessary he or she must be able to act as an emergency supervisor when dealing with any emergencies related to the animals under their care.
  • Keep accurate and detailed daily animal keeping records as well as records of all individual animals under their care. Monitor animals for illness, injury or unusual behavior and take appropriate action as well as assist with veterinary care.
  • Help and direct others in the capture, restraint and transport of animals within their assigned area.
  • Carry forward with the breeding program in alignment with the Intuitional Breeding Plan released by the curator. Ensure that necessary steps are taken to reach the breeding target.
  • Routinely inspect animal enclosures, service areas and facilities for cleanliness, sanitation and structural defects and reporting all maintenance and structural defects of animal enclosures and exhibits to the Collection Supervisor.

Role Specification

Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Zoology, Zoo Management or equivalent of three (3) years’ experience in a supervisory position.

Experience: At least three (3) years of zoo animal care experience, including one (1) year of supervisory experience or in the same capacity

Skills: Proficiency in the use of computer operating systems; Animal handling and restraint techniques; written and oral communication; research and the Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS) software.
