WAZA and IZE extend strategic partnership to advance global conservation education
Posted: 24 April 2026
The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) and the International Zoo Educators Association (IZE) have renewed and extended their long-standing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), reaffirming a strategic partnership that continues to strengthen global leadership in conservation education and public engagement.
Building on years of close collaboration, the renewed agreement reinforces a shared commitment to advancing the role of zoos and aquariums in delivering meaningful conservation outcomes through education, communication, and behaviour change.
Strengthening global impact through education
The WAZA–IZE partnership remains a key enabler of WAZA’s work to support members worldwide. Together, both organisations contribute to advancing the World Zoo and Aquarium Conservation Education Strategy, a unified global framework guiding educational practice and behavioural impact across the global zoo and aquarium community.
Through this collaboration, WAZA and IZE will continue to:
- Strengthen member capacity in communication, education, and behaviour change
- Develop and promote a shared global narrative on the societal value of zoos and aquariums
- Facilitate knowledge exchange and collaboration across regions
- Extend the reach and impact of both organisations at a global level
A shared roadmap for 2026–2027
In January 2026, WAZA and IZE established a joint roadmap to guide their collaboration over the next two years, with clear priorities and shared ownership.
Key focus areas include:
- Developing a global conservation education value narrative, supported by a strong evidence base
- Showcasing the impact of the World Zoo and Aquarium Conservation Education Strategy
- Enhancing joint visibility and impact through international platforms and initiatives, including Reverse the Red
This renewed partnership reflects the growing importance of education as a driver of conservation impact and public engagement. By aligning expertise, resources, and global networks, WAZA and IZE continue to support their members in connecting people with nature and fostering lasting behavioural change.
We encourage members to follow upcoming joint initiatives and make use of shared resources like the World Zoo and Aquarium Conservation Education Strategy and opportunities arising from this collaboration.
The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) is the global alliance of regional associations, national federations, zoos and aquariums, dedicated to the care and conservation of animals and their habitats around the world.
