6th Joint TAG Meeting
Date: 25 – 28 May 2026
Taipei Zoo, Taipei
The 6th Joint TAG Meeting brings together the global zoo and aquarium community to strengthen collaboration, alignment and impact in population management for species recovery.
For the first time in its twelve-year history, this biennial meeting will be hosted in Asia, reflecting the growing importance of cross-regional cooperation and shared leadership in addressing complex population management challenges.
Why this meeting matters
Effective population management depends on connection:
- Connection between TAGs and across regions and taxa
- Connection between ex situ planning and in situ conservation
- Connection between people, data, tools and expertise
The Joint TAG Meeting is designed as a shared working space where these connections are intentionally built and strengthened, enabling more integrated approaches, better decision-making and stronger conservation outcomes.
What’s new in 2026
In recognition of evolving collaborations, the meeting has expanded beyond TAG Chairs and Vice Chairs. The 2026 Joint TAG Meeting welcomes:
- TAG members
- Population biologists
- IUCN Specialist Groups
- In situ conservation partners
- Other conservation experts
This broader participation reflects WAZA’s commitment to connecting expertise across roles, regions and conservation systems.
Programme focus
The programme combines individual TAG meetings with joint sessions, workshops and open forums designed to:
- Foster cross-regional and cross-taxon collaboration
- Bridge ex situ and in situ population management
- Share tools, data and practical approaches under real-world constraints
- Align population management with global frameworks such as the WAZA 2027 Population Management Goal (27PMG), Reverse the Red and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
Interactive formats prioritise dialogue, shared learning and collective problem-solving.
A living context for biodiversity
Hosting the meeting at Taipei Zoo situates global population management discussions within a region of exceptional biodiversity, reinforcing the relevance of collaborative action for species recovery.
