WAZA Welcomes New Member – Cleveland Metroparks Zoo
Posted: 7 December 2022
The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) is pleased to welcome back Cleveland Metroparks Zoo as its Institution Member.
Established in 1882, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo spreads across 183 acres in Cleveland, Ohio, United States. The zoo is divided into several areas: Australian Adventure, African Savanna, Northern Wilderness Trek, The Primate, Cat and Aquatics Building, Waterfowl Lake, the RainForest and the recently added Asian Highlands. Cleveland Metroparks Zoo has one of the largest collections of primates in North America.
Dr Martín Zordan, WAZA CEO said, ‘WAZA is glad to welcome back Cleveland Metroparks Zoo with its expertise in connecting people with wildlife and inspiring people to conserve the natural world.’
Cleveland Metroparks Zoo has implemented an animal welfare monitoring programme. This strategy focuses on choice, control and mental stimulation as an element of animal care, instead of separate processes. They are continuously evaluating choices for animals under their care and their welfare to ensure the best possible environments for their animals.
‘After dealing with the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is excited to rejoin WAZA and continue to work to secure a future for wildlife’, said Dr Christopher Kuhar, the Executive Director of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.
In addition to working with communities to secure a future for wildlife around the world, the Zoo also engages communities in collaborative efforts closer to home. They develop programmes based on community needs and activities.
The Zoo’s excellence has been widely recognised. They won the 2021 National Gold Medal “Best in Nation” Award for Excellence in Parks and Recreation Management. They are also a member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and Species360, both WAZA members.
