Zookeeper with a Focus on Marsupials - Wilhelma Zoologisch-Botanischer Garten

Overview

The Wilhelma in Stuttgart is a scientifically managed zoological and botanical garden with approximately 11,000 animals representing 1,200 species. Thus making it one of the biggest zoos in terms of numbers of animals, not only in Germany but also worldwide. In addition to the animals, there are also around 8,500 plant species growing within this historical park and in the Wilhelma greenhouses. With more than 1.6 million visitors per year, the Wilhelma is one of the largest leisure facilities in southern Germany. It is a company owned by the state of Baden-Württemberg and is currently advertising for an animal keeper position (f/m/d) with a focus on marsupials to commence as of January 1st, 2023.

Terra Australis is presently being built on the Wilhelma site to house spectacular animals such as koalas, wombats and tree kangaroos. Smaller nocturnal species such as brushtail possum, quoll and sugar glider will be included in the new exhibit.

To strengthen our organisation, we are looking for someone who is able to work well within an established team and who is enthusiastic about the unique animal population at the Wilhelma. An active interest in the further development and implementation of modern methods in animal husbandry is an expected requirement.

Main tasks

  • Feeding, care and monitoring of the animals kept in your area

  • Assisting in the development of animal enrichment, as well as maintaining a stimulating habitat for all animals and carrying out animal training in accordance to the section management protocol.

  • Breeding of the animal species you look after

  • Animal health monitoring and assistance with veterinary treatments

  • Active participation in public relations (feeding, demonstrations, guided tours, events)

Qualifications

  • Fully trained zoo animal keeper

  • Professional experience in zoo animal care, especially with marsupials

  • Knowledge of the biology of marsupials and monotremes

  • Experience in the field of occupational safety and in dealing with dangerous animals

  • Knowledge and experience of animal training and enrichment

  • Social skills and a high level of commitment

  • Ability to cooperate and work in a team within your own section and in cooperation with other sec- tions and departments, such as the Wilhelma School

  • Organisational skills and personal responsibility

  • Basic technical understanding and manual skills

  • Willingness to further and advanced training

The position is rated according to the collective agreement for state employees (group 6) and is permanent. Severely disabled applicants will be given preference if they are equally qualified.
