We are looking for a new member to join the Department of «Animals & Conservation» effective immediately, as a:

senior bird keeper

You have the unique opportunity to adopt a leadership position (as Section Head) in the development and expansion of our bird breeding stations. Together with your team you will be responsible for breeding various bird species – with a focus on Psittaciformes and Passeriformes – to make a significant contribution in the sustainability of the European bird population in zoos and in the protection of the species ex situ . You bring a lot of enthusiasm and depth of knowledge in the biology, behaviour, and husbandry of birds. The breeding station is in a behind-the-scenes area of the zoo and is currently being generously expanded. In terms of structural organisation, you will report to the Department Headkeeper for «Masoala & Exotarium».

Your tasks

  • Evaluate, adjust and coordinate the husbandry, training, breeding standards, and techniques for
    endangered Psittaciformes and Passeriformes
  • Positively manage keeper staff by overseeing the preparation and maintenance of enclosures
  • Administration (accurate animal record keeping, taking minutes, coordination with other departments,
  • Control of technical facilities of the buildings, minor maintenance and repair work
  • Monitor and improve the sustainable use of resources
  • Contribution to scientific research projects

What you bring

  • Several years of experience of keeping, training and breeding birds in a professional setting (a certified animal keeper training is of advantage)
  • Ability to work within a team in a leading position, being open-minded, committed, flexible,
    psychologically and physically resilient and motivated to work with both people and animals
  • Strong communication and organisational skills
  • Acute observation and perception skills
  • Computer competency (MS-Office, Excel, and ZIMS is an advantage)
  • Willingness to acquire basic german language skills
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, weekends, and holidays
