Overview
As a lead elephant keeper reporting directly to the curator, you will be responsible for an attractive guest experience and for cutting edge animal husbandry in the elephant department. In addition to elephants, other mammals as well as reptiles and birds are to be cared for in this department.
duties and responsibilities
- Planning, coordination and organization of the day-to-day business for the team
- Support and further development of a modern elephant training scheme, in protected contact
- Maintenance of the landscaping, plant care, and new plantings
- Collaboration and coordination of research projects within the department
- Assistance during veterinary treatments
- Quality control of animal facilities, guest areas, as well as of the technical equipment
- New keeper staff initiation and training
- Ensuring a smooth flow of information
- Ensuring compliance with safety regulations
Required qualifications and experience
- Degree in animal husbandry, craft profession, zoology, biology or similar
- Sound knowledge of behaviour, nutrition, habitat, and anatomy of all animal species in the department, working experience with elephants is an advantage
- Flair for the improvement and further development of a modern elephant-husbandry program
- Ability to handle and run technical equipment
- Robust personality with high safety awareness and physical resilience
- Ability to prioritize workloads and instruct staff to reflect those priorities
- Knowledge of German or willingness to learn
