Zoos Victoria is a world leading zoo-based conservation organisation, fighting extinction to secure a future rich in wildlife through conservation of wildlife and connecting with the hearts and minds of the community. With three world class zoos (Melbourne Zoo, Healesville Sanctuary and Werribee Open Range Zoo) Zoos Victoria works to bring about a change in attitudes, beliefs and actions in ways that reduce threats to wildlife, promotes the wellbeing of wildlife and prevents extinction.

Werribee Open Range Zoo (WORZ) located in the City of Wyndham, Victoria’s fastest growing municipality, has experienced rapidly increasing visitation from 411,419 visitors in 2011-12 to 657,837 visitors in 2018-19. In 2020 the Victorian State Government awarded $85 million for the expansion of WORZ which includes seven key projects including a sky safari and a 20 hectare elephant’s sanctuary.

The Role

Reporting to the CEO, the Director will continue the important work of the site including conservation, breeding and recovery programs and emergency wildlife response. Engaging with key stakeholders including local community, local government and tourism sectors, the Director will drive growth, ensure ongoing operations and continue the delivery of the expansion program. Working with the executive of Zoos Victoria, the Director will lead strategy development for the site including care of animals, visitor engagement and maintenance of the grounds and assets.

As an established and successful senior leader from within a zoo, conservation or sanctuary environment you will have experience in the daily operations of a large wildlife organisation and have lead large scale developments, projects and builds. With strategic vision, a well-developed network and a leadership style that is compassionate, collaborative and impactful you will also have the ability to represent the property and Zoos Victoria. An ability to problem solve, make strong and data based decisions often rapidly and navigate the complex stakeholder landscape will all be essential for fulfilling the requirements of this key role. A Bachelor Degree in a related discipline and qualifications in management/business will be highly regarded.
