WAZA Taps Zoos Victoria CEO Gray as President

Dr. Jenny Gray of Zoos Victoria in Australia has been appointed as President of the World Association of Zoo and Aquariums (WAZA), effective immediately.

Gray, WAZA’s president-elect, was due to assume her two-year term as president in October. Her succession was accelerated when the previous WAZA president, Susan Hunt, left her position as Chief Executive Officer of Perth Zoo in Australia to take up a new leadership role in the Western Australian Government.

WAZA Bylaws require all office holders to hold senior management positions in member zoos or aquariums.

“I am honored to take up this important role on behalf of WAZA at such a time,” said Gray. “The zoo and aquarium community is poised to play a leadership role on important issues such as climate change, illegal trade, marine litter, animal welfare, and the conservation of so many iconic and endangered species, and I am excited by the challenge.”

As president, Gray presides over the WAZA Council and works closely with WAZA committees and the WAZA Executive Office. She will also continue her day-to-day responsibilities managing the three institutions that comprise Zoos Victoria: the Melbourne Zoo, the Werribee Open Range Zoo, and the Healesville Sanctuary.

Gray will be formally introduced as WAZA President at the 72nd WAZA Conference, which will be held 15-19 October in Berlin.  Theo Pagel, Director of the Cologne Zoo in Germany, also moved up to assume the role of WAZA President-elect.

Hunt left Perth Zoo to become Chief Executive Officer of LotteryWest, the state lottery for Western Australia that raises funds for hospitals, arts, sports, the environment and community groups throughout the region.

“I am confident that WAZA is in good hands,” Hunt said. “Jenny and I have worked closely on WAZA committees and as President and President-elect and I know that Jenny will be wonderful in this global leadership role.”

WAZA is the voice of a global community of zoos and aquariums and a catalyst for joint conservation action. WAZA represents over 350 regional associations, national federations and zoo and aquariums in more than 50 countries. For more information, visit www.waza.org or contact secretariat@waza.org.
