WAZA Picks Veteran Journalist for Communications Role

The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) has turned to South Africa journalist Gavrielle Kirk-Cohen to craft its media and public relations messages as WAZA Communications Coordinator.

Kirk-Cohen will be responsible for delivering the organisation’s evolving communications programme and strategy, as well as publicising the work of WAZA and its nearly 400 members.

“Zoos and aquariums have so many important stories to tell, and I am delighted we have Gavrielle Kirk-Cohen at WAZA to help us spread the word,” said Doug Cress, Chief Executive Officer of WAZA. “Her ability to communicate – not just in print, but in film, in radio, and via the internet – will allow us to reach a much larger audience than ever before.”

Kirk-Cohen was the former acting public relations manager at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland and previously worked as a freelance journalist, blogger and filmmaker. In 2012, she produced a documentary on the rhinoceros poaching crisis in South Africa, “Rhino Wars: The Silent Slaughter.”

Kirk-Cohen obtained a BA Languages (Journalism) from the University of Pretoria, and a Masters Degree from Edinburgh Napier University. Her tasks at WAZA will include publication of the WAZA Flash, WAZA News and WAZA Magazine, as well as all social media and select media campaigns.

“I am delighted and honoured to take up this opportunity to join WAZA,” Kirk-Cohen said. “Zoos and aquariums play a vital role in safeguarding species and habitats from extinction, as well as furthering research and education. I believe it is incredibly important to emphasise these contributions through effective communications and make people worldwide familiar with the importance of accredited zoos and aquariums.”

WAZA is the global alliance of nearly 400 leading zoos and aquariums in over 50 countries. For more, visit www.waza.org or contact secretariat@waza.org.
