Sustainable use of forests to be global priority at WAZA conference

The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) will make the sustainable use of forests a global priority at the 73rd WAZA Annual Conference that will be held 21-25 October in Bangkok.

Kim Carstensen, Director General of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), will explore ways to work with the world’s leading zoos and aquariums in a keynote address that emphasizes WAZA’s commitment to sustainable development.

“Zoos and aquariums are at the forefront of tackling global environmental issues and we receive over 700 million visitors each year,” said Doug Cress, Chief Executive Officer of WAZA. “As such, we can play an important role in working with the Forest Stewardship Council to help ensure forests are responsibly managed and protected for future generations.”

Carstensen has been the Director General of the FSC since 2012 and is a global leader within the environment and development sectors. Prior to joining FSC, Carstensen managed FairGreenSolutions, an environmental strategy and sustainable development consultancy that, among other things, helped link the concepts of ‘Green Economy’ and sustainable development.

Carstensen previously also led WWF-Denmark as Executive Director, before heading to work at WWF’s Global Climate Initiative, where he led the organisation’s development of nationally relevant and climate change programmes in the world’s key economies and its push for global climate action across governments and businesses.

The FSC is an independent, non-profit, membership-led organisation that sets standards under which forests and companies are certified to ensure responsible forest management. FSC certification helps forests remain thriving environments for future generations. The FSC consults a global network of environmental, social, and economic members to ensure that forest standards represent everyone’s needs, from Indigenous Peoples to endangered animal species.

The 73rd WAZA Annual Conference is hosted by the Zoological Park Organisation (ZPO) Thailand and will be held at the Avani Riverside Bangkok Hotel from 21-25 October 2018. The conference theme "Wild at Heart" will focus on topical issues of conservation, animal welfare and sustainable development among many more.
