Integrated Pest Management for Wildlife Collections

Who is running the course?
The course is co-directed by the International Training Centre of the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and the University of Reading Vertebrate Pests Unit. The extensive experience of the VPU in the development and application of rodenticides will be brought to the course; rats and mice are probably the most challenging pest in the urban environment.

The course will be based at the ITC at Durrell’s headquarters on the
island of Jersey, British Channel Islands.
How long will the course last?
3 days (arrive Monday evening, leave Friday morning)
What will be covered on the course?
The objective of the course is to equip pest control operatives working with exotic animal and bird collections in zoos and wildlife parks to implement effective pest control at zero risk to non-target species. At the end of the course participants will be able to:
- Understand how the ecology and biology of pest species affects their management;
- Identify the appropriate tools available for pest control in wildlife collections;
- Mitigate the risks of pest management to non-target species and the general public;
- Outline the key components of a cost-effective pest control strategy;
- Draft a pest control strategy for their own situation.
How much will it cost?
£750
This will include 4 nights full-board accommodation on-site at Les Noyers (adjacent to the ITC and animal collection); tuition fee; and all course materials. An optional 4th day will cover participants drafting their own strategy with the guidance of course directors for an additional fee of £75.
