Project Batagur Baska

To promote the survival of northern river terrapins in Bangladesh both in situ and ex situ

This project targets the third rarest turtle species in the world, the northern river terrapin (Batagur baska), with no confirmed wild populations. Its mission is to guarantee the long-term survival of this species through securing the remaining individuals in a safe facility for breeding and research, conducting field surveys to gather information about the current status in the wild, raising awareness within the local communities, carrying out genetic analyses to create an international studbook covering all known specimens and potentially reintroducing animals.

WAZA Conservation Project 11012 is implemented by Vienna Zoo and Dr Peter Praschag. Other stakeholdes involved in the project include TSA, CARINAM and the State Forest Department of Bangladesh.
