Coral Reef Conservation and Restoration in the Mexican Caribbean

To establish a nationwide coral restoration programme in Mexico

Together with the National Autonomous University of Mexico (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, UNAM), Puerto Morelos Reef National Park (CONANP), Xcaret Park and Aquarium, Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium and Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, SECORE started a multi-year coral conservation and restoration project in Mexico in 2013.

UNAM has a long record of coral reproduction work addressing the endangered reef-building elkhorn coral and other species. In collaboration with UNAM and national stakeholders, we aim to establish a nationwide coral conservation and restoration programme.

WAZA Conservation Project 14005 is implemented by a consortium consisting of the SECORE Foundation, National Autonomous University of Mexico, Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium, Xcaret Park and Aquarium and Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. The project is supported by Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium, Xcaret Park and Aquarium and Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. Other stakeholders involved in the project include the National Autonomous University of Mexico and Puerto Morelos Reef National Park (CONANP).
