Chaparri Conservation

To preserve a natural dry forest ecosystem in Peru

Our main objective is to preserve the natural dry forest ecosystem of Chappari Ecological Reserve in Peru by allowing local people to sustainably protect their natural resources and benefit from them.

Our specific objectives are to :

• Protect the Tumbesian biodiversity by studying and monitoring it as well as by rescuing and rehabilitating it with a focus on Chaparri emblematic species such as the Andean bear (through the Andean bear rescue centre), white-winged guan and Andean condor.
• Develop social and economic alternatives through ecotourism, handicraft, education and local people involvement in habitat management and scientific studies.

The long-term objective is to make Chaparri a community-led conservation and ecotourism model project where local people benefit from protecting their natural and cultural resources.

WAZA Conservation Project 11007 is implemented by Tu Tierra, with support provided by Bioparc de Doué la Fontaine and South Lakes Wild Animal Park. Other stakeholders involved in the project include the Santa Catalina de Chongoyape community, owner of the reserve and represented by the community association, ACOTURCH (Asociación para la COnservación de la naturaleza y el TURismo sostenible de CHaparrí).
