2009 Year of the Gorilla

The 2009 Year of the Gorilla was a joint initiative of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), the United Nations Great Apes Survival Partnership (GRASP) and WAZA.

Under the umbrella of WAZA over 100 zoos joined forces in support of the gorilla campaign. The ambassadors in the zoos help to implement WAZA's commitment to raise awareness, focus on environmental education and fund field conservation projects.

Zoos, in cooperation with numerous partners, have been heavily engaged in gorilla conservation for many years. Examples include gorilla reintroduction in Gabon, protected area management in Cameroon, Nigeria and Congo as well as ecotourism development and conservation education. In addition, the findings of Dian Fossey are well associated with modern zoo biology and gorillas successfully breed in zoos.
